Cutting boards are available in several different materials and styles. The main thing you should consider when shopping for a cutting board is what you’ll mainly be using it for. There are a few main types of cutting boards from which to choose:

Corian Cutting Boards

Corian, made by Dupont, is beautiful and functional. Cutting boards made of this material are available in a variety of colors and sizes and offer the advantage of being resistant to bacteria due to the non-porous surface. They are easy to clean, affordable and add a classy touch to any kitchen. They can be damaged over time with use, and they cannot withstand heat, so don’t place hot pots of food on them.

Plastic Cutting Boards

Plastic cutting boards are extremely cost-effective and are also made in many different colors and sizes. Plastic is easy to clean – dishwasher safe – and is also non-porous, which helps prevent cross-contamination and bacteria sticking in crevices from foods such as raw meat.

Glass Cutting Boards

Glass cutting boards are another popular option, and for good reason. Glass cutting boards are virtually impossible to wear out and can be put in the dishwasher over and over again. Glass is non-porous, can tolerate hot cookware, and lends a beautiful look to any kitchen. The disadvantages of a glass cutting board include the fact that it is breakable and can dull or even damage kitchen knives if used frequently.

Wood Cutting Boards

Perhaps the most popular of all cutting boards are wood cutting boards. They are attractive, durable, do not damage cutlery as quickly as some other materials, and are available in almost every size, shape and price range. The main concern with a wood cutting board is the fact that it is porous, which means that it can retain bacteria that may cause food-borne illness. It is imperative that a wood cutting board be kept scrupulously clean – this means washing in very hot water and soap immediately after use and allowing to air dry completely before using again. If your wood cutting board develops any cracks or damaged spots it must be discarded (or you can simply hang it on the wall as a charming decorative piece).

One unique cutting board option that isn’t actually a board is a cutting mat. Cutting mats save space, as they can be rolled up and stored in a kitchen cabinet or drawer, and are perfect for camping or road trips.
